Mattia Belz is mostly active in the field of contemporary jazz and improvised music. He grew up in Berne, Switzerland playing at first classical trumpet in his hometown. Later on he studied jazz trumpet and composition at the „Hochschule der Künste Bern (HKB)“ and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2019. Since 2024 he’s pursuing his masters degree improvising artist at „Folkwang University of Arts“ in Essen, Germany.
Belz has been an active member in the jugendjazzorchester.ch (Swiss youth jazz orchestra) for five years as a trumpet player. He also composed the piece „Konsumschlacht“ for the large ensemble in the composition program of the orchestra under guidance of Benjamin Weidekamp and Michael Haves. Belz appeared on the two album recordings „Kuh auf dem Eis“ (2022) and „Betreutes Schreiben“ (2025), which they recorded in the studio of Jazzcampus, Basel.
Besides playing the trumpet, Belz started composing original music for bands.
His latest projects include Sparkle Shark.
